The Rolex reference decoder

Read any Rolex reference number — what the digits and letters mean, and how reference, serial, and model name differ.

A Rolex reference number is a code — usually five or six digits plus a letter suffix — that pins down the exact model, case material, and bezel of a watch. Learn to read it and you can identify almost any modern Rolex on sight.

What the parts mean

Take 126610LN. The leading digits identify the model and case family (1266 = Submariner Date). The next digit is the case material (0 = Oystersteel, 8 = yellow Rolesor, 5 = Everose, 9 = white gold). The final digits and letters describe the bezel: LN is lunette noire (black bezel), LV is lunette verte (green), BLRO is blue-and-red (Pepsi).

Reference vs serial vs model

The reference describes the configuration and is the same across every watch of that spec. The serial is unique to one watch and encodes its production period. The model name (Submariner, Datejust) is the marketing name. All three matter when verifying a watch.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

What is a Rolex reference number?

It is the code identifying the exact model, case material, and bezel of a Rolex — for example 126610LN is a steel Submariner Date with a black bezel. It is the most reliable way to identify or compare a watch.

Where do I find the reference number?

It is engraved on the case between the lugs, on the side hidden by the bracelet (you usually must remove the bracelet to see it), and printed on the warranty card.
