Below: what makes the Fat Lady (16760) distinctive, what to verify before buying, and how it fits the Naples collector scene.
The 16760 was the very first GMT-Master II — the model that introduced an independently adjustable hour hand so the wearer could change local time without disturbing the GMT reading. To fit the new calibre 3085, Rolex made the case noticeably thicker, and collectors christened it the “Fat Lady” (also the “Sophia Loren”).
It wore a black-and-red aluminium bezel — the Coke colourway — and was the first GMT-Master II with a sapphire crystal. It ran only about five years before the slimmer 16710 replaced it in 1989.
What to verify
In Naples
Naples is a strong market for a watch like the Fat Lady: a settled, well-travelled collector base and a steady trade in vintage sport Rolex through private sales. A 16760 is a watch you research and authenticate, not one you buy on impulse from a glass case.
We are an independent reference, not a dealer: we cannot sell you a Fat Lady or appraise one. What we can do is help you read the reference and know what separates a correct example from a cobbled-together one.
Fat Lady FAQ
The Fat Lady is GMT-Master II reference 16760, made from 1983 to 1988. It was the first GMT-Master II and earned the nickname because its case was thicker than the GMT-Master it replaced. It is also called the Sophia Loren.
Because the 16760's case is visibly fatter than the earlier GMT-Master. The extra thickness made room for calibre 3085, the first movement with an independently adjustable 12-hour hand.
The 16760 came with a black-and-red aluminium bezel — the colourway collectors call “Coke.” Original inserts often show gentle fading, which many collectors prize.
Naples has an active Rolex market through retail, boutiques, and private sales — but Naples Rolex is an independent reference, not a dealer. We don't sell or broker watches. Use this guide to verify a Fat Lady before you buy, wherever you find it.
